Q. What does haircut mean to you?
Haircuts mean everything to me and are at the center of my life, they’re not just a source of income. It’s something I can continue to pursue with passion. When I shake someone’s hand, I can’t help but look at their hairstyle. Ever since I first pick up a pair of scissors and clippers, haircutting has been so deeply rootetd in my life that I have never been interested in anything else.
It’s not just cutting hair at the salon, but the filming, styling, stage performances, teaching, and everything else related to haircuts that I’m involved in right now, I feel like it’s the best job ever. After watching a movie, I might not remember the actor’s name, but I remember the hairstyle clearly.
To me, cutting hair is a job, it’s my life.
Q. What does MIZUTANI mean to you?
To me, Mizutani scissors are one of a kind. After a long 100-years history, they have now reached a stage that can truly be called “perfection.”
Knowledge alone does not develop skill. Skill cannot be honed without daily practice. I don’t just cut hair. By cutting hair, I am constantly improving my technique.
The important thing is that scissors are not simply “tools.” Scissors are an extension of my arm, and a part of my spirit. That to me is what MIZUTANI is.
Being able to completely trust these tools are of paramount importance to me as an artist and craftsman.
